Christurch, ja daarop vlieg ik aan in november, mijn reis begint voor 2011 in dit stukje zuider eiland vannieuw zeeland. Ik ga weer lekker richting mijn favoriet stukje aarde toe, ik ga bar blend in wellington weer opzoeken en haley en de bende lekker geinen en een weerzien zal heerlijk zijn, de eerste plaatsen zijn al bekend en voor de rest de reis brengt me wat het brengt en ik zie wel wat ik ga doen zoland natuur en cultuur samen gaan met genieten, mensen ontmoeten, lekker buiten leven, bbq's, zingen begeleid met gitaartje en veel vrolijkheid, Christchurch, Christchurch (Maori: ?tautahi) is de grootste stad op het Zuidereiland, en de op één na grootste stad van Nieuw-Zeeland met ruim 380.000 inwoners. De stad is vernoemd naar de Christ Church van de universiteit van Oxford en ligt halverwege de Oostkust aan de monding van de rivier de Avon. De stad wordt ook wel 'De meest Engelse stad buiten Engeland' genoemd. Op 31 juli 1856 werd Christchurch per Koninklijk Besluit een stad en het is daarmee de oudste stad in Nieuw-Zeeland. Veel gebouwen in Christchurch zijn in neo-gotische stijl en in de stad zijn veel parken en plantsoenen te vinden, en ja nu heeft de stad een flinke opdonder gehad met deze aarbeving en ik ben dan ook benieuwd of ik iets zal terug vinden in november, ik vind het daadwerkelijk echt zo erg voor de mensen daar zo vele levens die daar zijn gelaten en dan de schade jemig wat een ellende voor die mensen het is onvoorstelbaar voor een buitenstaander denk ik. Ik sta er wel bij stil nu ook om de band die ik heb met nieuw zeeland en de mensen die ik ken. In de nacht van 3 op 4 september 2010 deed er zich in en om Christchurch een aardbeving voor met een kracht tussen 7.1 en 7.4 op de schaal van Richter. Hierbij liepen, vooral in het centrum van de stad, veel (historische) gebouwen aanzienlijke schade op. Het hypocentrum van de aardbeving lag op ca 10km diepte nabij Darfield, ca 40km van het centrum van Christchurch. Sinds de zware aardbeving van 3 februari 1931 in Napier was dit de zwaarste beving tot dan toe in Nieuw Zeeland geregistreerd. Seismologen dachten eerst dat er ca.20 breuklijnen in het gebied rondom Christchurch lagen, echter deze beving heeft de schatting omhoog gebracht naar ca 100 breuklijnen. Op dinsdagmiddag 22 februari 2011 was er opnieuw een aardbeving in en om Christchurch. Deze beving had een kracht van 6,3 op de schaal van Richter. Hoewel de kracht minder was dan de beving van 2010 was de schade groter dan toen. De kathedraal van Christchurch is bij deze beving deels ingestort, Bijna een derde van Christchurch bestaat uit parken, plantsoenen of recreatieterrein. Christchurch wordt daarom ook wel de Garden City van Nieuw-Zeeland genoemd, er zijn verschillende musea in Christchurch. Het Air Force World Museum heeft een uitgebreide tentoonstelling die gewijd is aan de geschiedenis van de militaire luchtvaart van Nieuw-Zeeland. Het Canterbury Museum heeft permanente tentoonstellingen over, onder meer, de ontdekking van Antarctica, de kolonisatie, de Maorische cultuur, en de oosterse kunst. Er zijn twee kunstmusea in Christchurch: Robert McDougall Art Gallery en Arts Centre of Christchurch. Andere musea zijn Science Alive! en het Ferrymead Historic Park, de luchthaven van Christchurch is Christchurch International Airport. Deze bevindt zich 12 kilometer buiten het centrum. De stad is het startpunt voor een tweetal treinverbindingen. De TranzAlpine, die via de Nieuw-Zeelandse Alpen naar Greymouth gaat, en de TranzCoastal die in Picton uitkomt, de laatste heeft bij mij ook een voorkeur om te nemen want Picton dat staat vast hoe er heen dat vinden we wel uit. Vervoer in de stad vindt voornamelijk met de auto plaats, alhoewel Christchurch wel lokale en lange-afstands busverbindingen heeft. Vanwege het vlakke terrein legt de stad een netwerk van fietspaden aan,Picton (vroeger Waitohi), Picton is een plaats op het Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland met circa 4000 inwoners. Het is de plaats waar veerboten aanleggen die de Straat Cook oversteken. De drukte van de haven en de treinen bepaalt de sfeer in dit tussen de zee en de bergen gelegen stadje. De brede straten en oude gebouwen langs de boulevard verraden de Europese oorsprong van Picton.( misschien nelson mee nemen, Nelson is een stad op het Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland en heeft ongeveer 57.700 inwoners. Het ligt in de regio Nelson die een groot gebied aan de kust beslaat en staat te boek voor het grootste aantal zonuren per jaar (2400) in Nieuw-Zeeland. In 1858 was Nelson de tweede stad van Nieuw-Zeeland. De stad is genoemd naar de Britse Admiraal Nelson. De oorspronkelijk bewoners van Nieuw-Zeeland, de Maori's, hebben nog steeds rechten in deze stad. De Maoristam met deze rechten is de Whakatu stam) en wat andere dingen van het zuiden en dan op via Queen Charlotte Sound, adembenemende schoonheid op weg na Wellington en eindbestemming Auckland. Ik ga oud bekenden zien en weet zeker vele nieuwe gezichten, het bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan zegt men vaak, ik kan me nu al verheugen als ik denk aan mt Victoria, QueenCharlotte Sound, het mooie natuur, de lieve mensen, Bar blend wakefealdstreet, lekker wandelen tracks doen, genieten en ook de uitdagingen die adventure land nieuw zeeland heeft ja daar klopt het hart wel sneller van.
